Dima Smotrit is the pseudonym of a Russian photographer based in southern Russia. Living voluntarily isolated in a small coastal town, he transforms ordinary objects and natural elements into visual explorations of escape from monotony, political uncertainty, and an unclear future.
His practice involves viewing familiar subjects from unusual angles, visually dissecting them, or radically distorting them. He describes this approach as Escapism, drawing inspiration from the beauty of everyday surroundings and finding unique character in something as simple as a crack in a wall.
“Less is more. I had been photographing for many years and had traveled to different places, but it was only when I began searching for beauty in the most ordinary things, just around the corner or right under my feet, and consistently walking the same streets over and over again that I found myself.”
